The Faire (a work in progress)

The day started out looking for an argument with a blustery with wind gasping and sputtering with ire, always having one more thing to say, and saying it all in a rush. Like a bully in a playground, gusts of wind were knocking over anything wasn't tied down, and quite a few thing that were.

What a day for a street faire but the eternal optimism of artists is only rivaled by the sun and moon and stars. And as everyone knows very well, gnomes and fairies are drawn to artists for there ceaseless sunny dispositions and love of all thing creative and magical.

So, with tents tied firmly to the ground and ready to display the artist's wares and guylines held down by the most stalworth of gnomes, it seemed that even the blustery day would relent and smile on this, first first warm day of spring.

A shriek then echoed through the castle halls, all the men at arms drawing their swords, followed closely by the exasperated queen's maid remonstrating "a princess does not shriek", only to be met by giggles emerging from a bouncing princess jumping on the bed "A faire, a faire!... the village is having a FAIRE!"

This last 'shriek' was shrieked with such perfect tone that half the crystal goblets in the castle shattered in resonant excitement and even the King's father, deaf these many years, was forced to cover his ears as the shriek also cracked his monocle.

The princess first begged, then pleaded, then stamped her foot "I WILL go to the faire this warm and sunny day!" And so it was, the King unable to refuse his daughter anything, and the Queen exasperated at everything, that a good half the castle would now go down to the faire with the princess and her retinue.

And what a marvelous faire it was, as musical instruments that played themselves ... the violin and cello fighting for the best parts to play made for a grand beginning to the faire. There were jewels that shone like the sun but only for an instant before popping like balloons and showering everyone with dancing lights playing hide and seek in their hair.

The princess spun around and around looking at everything until she because a whirling dervish, or so it seemed, that not even the queeen's maid could contain with prim and proper words "A princess does NOT squeal!" Oh but the magicians and mages and witches were overjoyed as the crowds would purchase anything the princess showed interest in and offered her trinkets and potions and gems in an effort to elicit a squeal of pleasure that would attract the biggest crowds and fees.
