The only gods this road has ever known

The Only Gods this Road has Ever Known

On a dark and lonely highway
destination unknown
the company I keep
are the ghosts of the open road
trying to outrun
the sins left far behind
laying scattered across the center divide
Rock music, burning oil, and wind
are the only gods this road has ever known
Rings all burnt and head gasket blown
sleeping in the back and pumping gas
working for money pretending to be people
the waitress at the diner sleeping with me
Jesus honey, go take a shower
you reek of engine oil and gasoline
The waitress got fat with our second son
the owner gave up and gave me the station
I never did stop reeking of gasoline
but when there's time I close up early
and we take on the open road
just my waitress and me pretending we're free
With rock music, burning oil, and wind
are the only gods this road has ever known
